Transport

  • Built or upgraded 1,110 miles of major roads since 2010. From 2010 to 2024, the Conservative built or updated 1,100 miles of major roads which make day to day journeys easier for people but also strengthens supply chains across the country.

  • Funded and supported the Access for All programme, increasing the accessibility of our rail network for all passengers. Since its inception in 2006, the Access for All programme installed around £900 million worth of accessible and step free routers at over 200 stations. This helped to ensure that all passengers could make use of our railways and boost economic potential across the UK.

  • Improved road safety by banning all use of mobile phones behind the wheel in 2022 and updated the highway code. The Conservatives banned all use of handheld mobile phones behind the wheel and updated the Highway Code to introduce a hierarchy of road users, which places road users most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy. This has helped to ensure safer roads for all people throughout the UK.

  • Delivered the first nationwide injunction against climate activists who block our key roads, standing on the side of working people. The Conservatives made use of every avenue of law to prevent the life endangering action carried out by protestors, which causes disruption to workers’ lives and livelihoods.

  • Boosted transport connections across the whole of the UK, bringing every corner of the country closer together. Published the final Union Connectivity Review report, setting out plans to boost transport connectivity across the whole UK, including working with devolved leaders to improve major transport links between Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, such as reducing congestion on the M4, upgrading the A75 and East Coast Mainline.

  • Abolished the Severn toll, benefiting drivers and better connecting our United Kingdom. Tolls were becoming a barrier to businesses and families in Wales, which is why the Conservatives stepped in to abolish it – saving the average motorists over £1,400 a year and opening up the Welsh economy.

  • Invested £3.5 billion in the bus sector between March 2020 and 2024, supporting local transport links to recover from the pandemic. The Conservatives invested an unprecedented investment of over £3.5 billion in the bus sector from March 2020 to support its recovery from the pandemic. This means services are there for people who rely on them to get to work, school or to see friends and family.

  • Put 4,000 zero emission buses on our roads and over 50,000 public electric vehicle charging points, delivering cleaner transport. In 2024 there were 4,000 additional zero emission buses on our roads – backed by an investment of almost £500 million – which helped to kick start a new generation of bus manufacturing. There were also 53,677 public charging devices available in the UK in 2024.
