Drove up education standards, making England one of the top performing countries for education in the western world. The number of schools rated good or outstanding in England rose from 68 per cent under Labour to 90 per cent under the Conservatives. In addition to primary aged children in England being named ‘Best in the West’ for reading, England significantly outperformed the international average and rose from 27th in 2009 under Labour to 11th in maths for 2023 under the Conservatives, giving children the best platform to build successful careers (data according to PISA).
The fastest growing economy in the G7 in 2024, despite the impact of Covid and lockdowns.
Lifted 1.1 million people out of poverty. Since 2010 the Conservatives reduced the number of people living in absolute poverty by 1.1 million, including 100,000 children and 200,000 pensioners. Their unprecedented cost of living support prevented 1.3 million people from falling into absolute poverty, including 300,000 children, 600,000 working age adults and 400,000 pensioners.
Youth unemployment has halved since 2010. Youth unemployment has halved since 2010 with 437,000 fewer unemployed young people since Labour left office.
Backed our Armed Forces, maintaining our world leading position in NATO. Defence spending was at 2.3 per cent of GDP in 2024 with plans to grow it to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2030. The NATO target is 2 per cent. The UK also leads the building of the world’s most advanced nuclear submarines and the next generation of fighter jets.
The Conservatives cut the deficit by nearly 80 per cent before the pandemic, giving the UK the stable public finances needed to protect jobs though furlough. Labour left the UK with a deficit of £158 billion in 2010 – between 2010 and 2019 this had fallen to £38 billion, a fall of 76 per cent. Because the deficit was significantly reduced it meant that there was more ability to borrow to support people during the pandemic, supporting millions of jobs and businesses.
Introduced and expanded automatic enrolment, helping 20 million more people start saving for retirement. In 2024, 20 million people were being automatically enrolled into a workplace pension, 88 per cent of eligible employees, with an additional £33 billion saved in real terms in 2021 compared to 2012.
The UK had more ‘unicorn’ billion-dollar tech startups ups in 2024 than Germany, France and Sweden combined. The tech sector as a whole passed $1 trillion in valuation, attracting high-skilled jobs and investment to the UK.
Championed offshore wind and nuclear energy, strengthening the UK’s energy security. When Labour left office in 2010 renewables made up just seven per cent of the UK’s energy mix, in 2024 that figure was almost 50 per cent. The UK is a world leader in offshore wind power and backed the next generation of nuclear power to cut emissions and strengthen the country’s energy independence.
Being the first major economy to halve emissions whilst growing the economy. Between 1990 and 2022 the UK halved emissions whilst growing the economy by 80 per cent. The UK was the first major economy to do so – the Conservatives also cut emissions faster than any other G7 country by delivering practical and pragmatic steps to reach net zero.
There were almost four million more people in 2024 with a job compared to 2010. There were almost 33 million people in work in the UK, up by almost four million since 2010, and the employment rate was estimated at 74.3 per cent, 4.1 percentage points higher than in 2010.
Delivered almost 5.8 million apprenticeships since 2010 and got more disadvantaged students into university. Since 2010 there have been almost 5.8 million apprenticeships starts, with over 752,000 people participating in an apprenticeship in England between August 2022 and January 2023 alone. In 2023, the number of disadvantaged students applying to the most selective universities continued to rise following a record number of disadvantaged students accepted in 2022.
Legalised gay marriage and protected the LGBT community. The Conservatives passed the Marriage Act in February 2013, pardoned gay and bisexual men convicted of now-abolished sexual offences and classified attacks against transgender people as hate crimes. The Government also made PrEp free on the NHS and published an HIV Action Plan in 2021, planning to end new HIV transmissions by 2030.
Cut National Insurance contributions by £900 in 2024 and ensured work always pays . Since 2010 the Conservatives nearly doubled the personal allowance from £6,475 to £12,570, so people kept more of the money they earned. They delivered a double cut to National Insurance for 29 million people, worth £900 a year to the average worker as the Government made progress on its long-term ambition to end the double tax on work.
Built 2.5 million more homes, including one million homes between 2019 - 2024. Between 2010 and 2024, over 2.5 million additional homes were delivered. Before 2024, the four highest annual rates of housing supply in 30 years have all come since 2018.
Increased the number of businesses across the UK by over one million since 2010, with over 5.6 million businesses operating in the UK in 2024. In 2010, there were 4.5 million businesses and there were 5.6 million in 2024– creating over 1.1 million new businesses since 2010 because the Conservatives put in the support and incentives in place to make the UK the best place in the world to start and run a business.
Helped to end low pay by introducing the National Living Wage (NLW), delivering a record boost to increase the NLW to an all-time high. The Conservatives introduced the NLW and increased it every year. In 2024 the NLW increased to £11.44 an hour, boosting the pay of two million people by £1,800 a year, while also delivering landmark reforms so it always pays more to work than be on benefits.
Gave people security in retirement, increasing the state pension by £900 in 2024. The Triple Lock has helped lift 200,000 pensioners out of poverty since it was introduced, and the Conservatives boosted the State Pension by £900 in 2024 – one of the largest ever cash increases – and £3,700 since 2010, ensuring dignity and security in retirement.
Invested record funding in the NHS, delivering more resources to cut waiting lists and improve care. The Conservatives increased NHS funding by over a third in real terms since 2010, and by 13 per cent in real terms since 2019. This included £3.45 billion to deliver the NHS Productivity Plan in full, and £2.3 billion – the largest central cash investment in MRI and CT scanning capacity in the history of the NHS to open 160 community diagnostic centres to deliver millions more tests, scans and checks.
Put over 20,000 extra police officers on our streets and more than halved crime since 2010. The Conservative Party exceeded its target by recruiting over 20,000 more police officers, with more officers than in 2010 to keep communities safe. This helped cut crime by 54 per cent since Labour left office.
Recruited a record number of doctors and nurses backed by the first ever Long-Term Workforce Plan, helping to cut waiting lists and deliver the care people deserve. Since 2010, 48,350 more doctors and 75,263 more nurses have been recruited, while the first ever NHS Long-Term Workforce Plan published in 2023 aims to ensure the UK trains the workforce needed to deliver worldclass care to patients for years to come.
Introduced 30 hours of free childcare for working families, which expanded to children aged nine months and over. The Conservatives introduced 30 hours of free childcare to working parents aged 3-4 years old, and then expanded childcare by introducing 30 hours of free childcare for working families in England with a child under the age of five – saving families an average of £6,900 per year.
Took tough action to tackle illegal immigration,. Boat crossings were down by 36 per cent in 2024, despite a rise across Europe. The Conservatives sped up asylum processing, with enforced returns up by 65 per cent compared to 2022. On top of this, they passed legislation to make the Rwanda deterrence plan fully operational.
Delivered over £400 billion of support throughout the pandemic, more than almost any other country in the world, protecting jobs, livelihoods and businesses. Thanks to unprecedented action, the Conservatives helped to protect more than 14.5 million jobs and provided over £100 billion in business grants and loans.
Introduced Universal Credit to replace the complex legacy benefit system, creating a modern benefit system that prepared people for employment and ensured work aways pays. Over six million people were supported by Universal Credit in 2024, aligning six legacy benefits into one simplified, dynamic system and eliminated the binary choice between work and welfare.
