2010-2024

National Security

  • Created the National Security Council, a powerful decision-making body to respond to any dangers British citizens may face. For the first time, the National Security Council, created in 2010, coordinated the information gathered by the intelligence agencies to secure the country against serious organised crime, terrorists and hostile foreign intelligence agencies.

  • Enshrined the Counter-Terrorism and Sentencing Act into law, locking terrorists up for longer. The Conservatives increased the minimum sentence for terror offences to 14 years, introduced post-sentence monitoring for up to 25 years, and ended the early release of the most serious offenders.

  • Overhauled state threats legislation to tackle modern methods of espionage, giving law enforcement the powers they need to defend our national security. The Conservatives’ National Security Act gave the security services new tools to crack down on those disclosing protected information, the theft of trade secrets and those assisting foreign intelligence services.

  • Closed loopholes on foreign spending in our elections, protecting our democracy against foreign influence. The Elections Act 2022 makes it harder for shadowy third parties to channel money into our country by allowing only UK based, or eligible overseas, electors to spend money in election campaigns and increasing transparency requirements for third-party campaigners who spend over £10,000.

  • Reviewed the Prevent Programme to deliver a stronger, more transparent, and proportionate approach to stopping people from being radicalised into terrorism, keeping our country safe. Prevent, the government-led programme that aims to stop individuals becoming terrorists, has already changed and saved the lives of individuals from all walks of life, with over 3,800 people offered early interventions through its Channel panels.
